I've inherited a Crystal XI report where there is a main report and a subreport in the RF section. The subreport is generated if a user enters a prompt for optional data. I want to suppress GF sections in the main report if the subreport is populated. Subreport has its own parameter which is called in its Record selection. My question - I want to suppress printing in the main report of some of the GF sections if the subreport is populated in the RF.

If it is populated based on a parameter in the sub record selection formula, then you could create the same parameter in the main report and link the main report parm to the subreport parm by using the dropdown in the lower left corner of the subreport linking screen to select {?parm} instead of the default {?pm-?parm}. Then use the parameter to conditionally suppress the GF sections of the main report.
