Blank Report Appearing Before Report 2

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I had a problem with a blank Report coming up at the end of a report. I posted a thread on it and got some help in eliminating it. Now, I have a report that comes up blank before my actual report. I tried using a method similar to what was used to get rid of the blank report coming up after the actual report, but it could not be used. This particular report is grouped by employee and the setting for New Page before is not selected for this section of my report. In fact, the only section on this report that has the new Page before setting selected is the Report header, and I could not deselect it because it is grayed out. How can I resolve this problem?

Cooleen,

Another cause of this is when you have the group options checked for "keep group together". Check your "Change Group Expert". If the first group can't fit on the first page, it will generate a page break and start on the second page, leaving the first page with only the report header.

If the report header is empty, you should suppress it. That in itself may solve the problem.

Thanks for the tip Ken. I checked the &quot;Change Group Expert&quot;, but &quot;Keep group together&quot; was not selected. The Report header is empty and suppressed, but I am still getting the blank report. For further clarity, the first page is not a blank page, but a blank report. It has the Page header info, the details section, and the page footer. however, the only info coming up is the info that was placed in the group footer. This info happens to be the Net Pay of the employee whose info comes up in the report that follows. [sig][/sig]

Well, lets use the same terminology.
The only way that you can get a &quot;blank report&quot; is if you are using subreports. Let me know if you have subreports.

Otherwise, you may be getting an extra page or an extra group at the beginning of your report.

Since this first page has the PH, details, GF with net pay, and PF, it isn't really blank.

Are these details supposed to print on page 2? Is the Net Pay duplicated on the second page? Is the first group simply being split into two pages?

Hi Ken,

The system I am designing this report for is A payroll system. The user has the option to view or print this report for one employee or an entire list of employees. However, info for one employee will only appear on one report.

In response to your questions:

There is no subreport in this report.

The details should only print on page per employee

Yes, Net pay is duplicated on the second page.
There is only one group in this report (by employee id) and I see no indication of a split. When you say split, do you mean a group has &quot;A&quot; and &quot;B&quot; portions? if so, there are no splits.

Is it possible for me to send you a copy of this report so you can have a look at it?

Thanks,

Cooleen

Cooleen,

You can email me a copy of the report, but make sure that you save it with data. Test this by closing and reopening the report. If it doesn't open immediately into preview, than it doesn't have saved data. Let me know if you don't know how to save data with a report. Also make sure that you answer the following questions here in the forum. That way others might benefit.

I think I undrstand now. You have one report. If the user asks for multiple employees you get a longer report that is grouped by employee. Each employee is really a group, not a report.

I still don't understand what is happening with the details section. You say that there are details printing on page 1.

Are these the first employee's details?
Are they duplicated on page 2 or are they printing on page 1 and then not printing on page 2?
Is everyone after page 2 correctly getting there details and net pay on the same page?

Ken,

I will Email this report to you Today.

To answer your questions:

Yes, only the first employee's Net Pay appears on the first page.

Net Pay comes up on Page 1, but all the info (including Net Pay) come up on Page 2.

Yes, everyone after page 2 is getting their info on the same page.

Thanks,

Cooleen,

You didn't answer the Qx about the details.

According to your earlier post, the net pay is in the Group footer, not details. But you said that you are also getting details on this first page.
What is printing in the details section on page 1?
Are there also details on the second page?
Are the details duplicated on page 2?

I will look for the report, but I don't have it yet. [sig]<p>Ken Hamady<br><a href=mailto:ken@kenhamady.com>ken@kenhamady.com</a><br><a href= Reports Taining by Ken Hamady</a><br>[/sig]

Ken,

I'm sorry about the oversight. The only details I am getting on the first page is repetitious. About 10 lines of a Description called, &quot;Total Deductions&quot;. And by the way, the Net Pay on the first page is no the Net Pay of the employee of on the second page, but the employee on the last page. The details on the other Pages are not repetitious, but are all correct. Only the Net Pay on the last page is a duplication of the Net Pay on the first Page.

Thanks,

Cooleen,

What you have are 23 extra records, with a blank employee value, which is why they are the first group of the report, and therefore the first page. If you add a rule that says the employee field has to be greater than blank, this page goes away.

These records are probably some type of marker record in the database, but they are not needed for the report. The only field that is filled in for these records is the net pay field. If you move net pay to the detail band, you will see that each record matches the net pay of someone on the report, which is why the last one you see (in the group footer) matches the last person in the report.
