because i needed similar data, the first thing i did was built a query with the necessary data. using the 'query builder' i adjusted the query that the report is based on in order to display the desired results. i inserted a chart based on the query that the report is based on. i 'linked' a field from the chart to a field in the report. i review the report and the chart displays NO data, but when i clear out the linked fields then data appears. the point for linking the fields is to display data that corresponds to the grouping set up on the chart. any advise whould be appreciated.

what field on the report is the field in the chart 'linked' to? i have done this, but only to a field that is in the record source of the report. is yours calculated during the report's formatting? maybe that is the problem. in any case, let's investigate:

make a new blank report.
make a table with a few rows of data in it that would be in the 'linked' field in the real report. make this table the report's record source.

make a copy of the 'real' query (so you don't mess up your good one) and use the test query for the basis of the chart.

plunk the chart on the test report. of course you'll have to tweek the 'test' query that the 'test' chart is based on to now 'link' to this fakey field on the test report. see if that works. if so then it's honking up reading that report field.

anyhow, try that first and let's see what happens.

thanx for your comments.

your initial suggestion was correct, there was a problem with the query the report was based on at the time the report was being formatted. the report and chart were based on the same query, however there were additional groupings and caluclations to the data that caused a 'miscommunication' between the chart and the report. i was able to resolve the issue by generating a second query based on the results the query of the report was based on. then i based the chart on the query and made the ncessary adjustments to get the desired results.
