Can you push mail from Exchange 2007 to a blackberry phone, or do you need BES.

It requires BES to work properly. You can get email to a Blackberry phone without it, but not easily and not as completely as the BES does (calendaring, etc.).

You can get BES Express for free with one user.

It only needs to do mail for now, but how much of a problem will it be to set up? I have exch pushing to HTC phones but blackberry is becoming popular, and need to find a quick solution for now. Will motivate a BES at a latter stage.

The BES setup is straight forward and well documented.

Not worried about the setup but the cost

Sorry...when you said

"how much of a problem will it be to set up?"

that you were worried about how hard it would be to set up. But, as I said before, and Zel has backed up, for one user it's free. You can check RIM's site for costs beyond that.

I have my mail pushed to my blackberry with no problems just set up a forwarder within the exchange to a external email address and then get your blackberry to check external address....

blog@abcd.co.uk > blog2@hotmail.co.uk <blackberry checks hotmail then i get the abcd email..

I cannot however send from blackberry with abcd email address

any help

That's not push mail, sorry, that's simply a forwarder and is not a connection to the Exchange server...thus you can't send using your company email addy.

Yes, I can forward mail to an external ISP who in turn runs blackberry, but I would prefer it if I could push mail to the device without the use of a BES server.
Just seems strange the Palm, Nokia, HTC all work. Maybe someone can give a brief description of why blackberry are creating a separate market for there product that incompatible with M$.

Actually, MS has created a separate market for there products that are incompatible with the Blackberry servers. RIM has been doing this far longer than MS has, and doing it quite well.

The solution if you want to use BB devices is a BES. If you want to complain about that, contact RIM.

Blackberry phones operate on a remote device MAPI connection and as such it is not Exchange integrated. The BES application is AD integrated.

You can use AD forwarding and in your setup for your BB you'll have BB mail which over the Internet you can use to set the sender email address to spoof your own work address. I have done this before and it works fine.

However, BES does it better.

But if he does that then email he sends from the BB won't show up in his Sent items on his desktop...which IMO is the strength of the BB/BES application.

BES is generally free but only if you're taking a few BB's - there is a cut down version which is free - I'm not sure of how much functionality there is on it though.

I'd always recommend BES as it gives you some very important benefits:- a demarcation between Exchange and BB so you can "see" devices, when they were last on the data network, how many messages are queued etc. It also allows you to remotely manage the devices if there's a problem especially handy for lost/stolen ones.

You can sync to exchange but AFAIK it's only by syncing the local PC.

BES is not free, BES Express is, and as has already been said, it's only free for one user. It is, however, a fully optioned version of the "for sale" version, and you can purchase licenses to extend BES Express up to 15 or 16 users. After that, you have to purchase the full retail version of BES.

I know it won't sync the sent items but it is an option if you don't want BES or its cost.

Yes...sorry, didn't mean to come across so bluntly. In my experience the users want the email on their Exchange server for various reasons...using a BB without BES negates that unfortunately. Just wanted them to be aware of that.

Agree.

If you want Exchange Push, get an HTC phone.
If you want a Blackberry phone, get BES.

Dave - I always assume you are making a valid point and don't get vexed in the slightest so do carry on pressing home points :)
