Hello,
I currently get a black screen on one of my devices (laptop,W7) no chance to communicate with the OS.
I have already booted with last known good configuration , screen came up for a short while , then went black again.
Any solutions out there are highly appreciated.
Thanks

Try booting to safe mode, and removing the GFX driver, then boot to "normal" mode. Once you see the screen you can update the GFX drivers again.

Is anything displayed when you attach an external monitor to the laptop?

Thanks for the replies, I have updated the driver(s) , the weird thing is now it's working again ?/ But don't really know if the problem is fixed ..it's an intermittent problem I guess..

Just out of curiosity, is the a Dell PC and are you using Dell's encryption? One of the last updates didn't like Dell's encryption and would give the user a black screen.

@ 2ffat, no not a dell, toshiba..

You never answered the question about about using the external monitor. Laptops have switches (usually FN + another button) that switches the video output between built-in LCD panel, external monitor and both. I know how Dell's works, but Toshiba may have another method. Check that your laptop is NOT outputting externally next time it happens.

ah ok, sorry since it was not a Dell I didn't respond. However thanks I will check on that , just don't know which key is associated with FN for that issue. But thanks for the help .

If you "don't know which key is associated with FN for that issue", connect your laptop to your (big flat screen) TV and start your laptop. If your video output points to external monitor, you should see your desktop on your TV :)

Have fun.

On Toshiba it is either FN+F5 or FN+F4 depending on the model.

Thanks so much, however this must be some kind of bug or virus since this is an intermittent problem. I am still researching that and have cleaned the device which was infected with the trojan.gen.

I kind of doubt that was the issue. Most malware wants you to see every aggravating message that it is trying to show you or extortion message. See what happens but think about running the video memory stress test from the Ultimate Boot CD.

Thanks ..yes , the funny thing this is one of my daughters laptop loaded with all kind of malware..at the beginning I was mad but then I started learning when always cleaning the device ..but the black screen is something I haven't solved it out yet

Hopefully you have her user set up as a non-admin user. It might cut down on "kiddie related crapification" of the laptop.
