using the pen tool, i traced the following graphic, and used pathfinder divide and intersect a few times.

my problem is that if i select a line, or if I select every line in the file (CTRL-A), and then try to change the colors, they don't change, but remain as black/blue??

can someone examine thsi file and figure out why that's happening, and what I should do in the future to fix it?

thanks.

Ok Im at a loss
I downloaded your ai file opened it in Illustrator 8 & 10 changed colors with no problem.
Did you try a save as then reopen it.?
Nothing was locked, layers seem fine. Are you using 8,9 or 10?

Jeff, Sef here. Solution found.

Well.. I can change the black lines at will...as I think Thom could too, however, the Med. Blue lines in the file are SCREWED UP !!!

Isn't that WEIRD ! I've run across this a few times in production and it's MADDENING. No amount of Ctrl+Shift+G or Ctrl+Alt+7,8 will Ungroup, UnClip or UN-screw the file... and I consider this to be a true glitch in the proggie. And it could be file corruption, but saving as .pdf (AI is based on PDF anyway) Or to another file maintain the bullet-resistant grouping.

However, by Saving to an .EPS (I used Ver. 8 w/ Level 3 PS) and reopening... you will DESTROY THE EVIL GROUPIES and reveal their real nature as disgusting, blue concealers of 'right nature.'

Or at any rate... you'll be back in business. All I have to say to Adobe is "golly gee". I wouldn't even BOTHER telling tech support, they'll be like, "really? Wow... guess you'll have to wait for the next version, sux for you."
Oh, and if your AI is truly evil... My fixed version is below... but try out my tip!

Peace. Sef.

Actually, this is to do with the whole layer being assigned an appearance. Select the problem item, open the Appearance palette, and at the top, click the word 'Layer'. There's your mid blue.

You can change it here, of course, but if you want to un-screw it, just click the 'Clear Appearance' button at the bottom of the Appearance palette (or use the fly out menu if you prefer).

It is pretty frustrating when you don't know where to look, but actually, there are some nice things that you can do when you get the hang of it, such as mixing multiple spot colors on the one object.

Awesome ! That's the REAL solution...

I had checked the objects appearances...but LAYER!
So the Layer Attribute then overrides all sublayers/objects attributes... like a color mode in PS, or Layer Style.

Beautiful.

Sef.
