So we've got an interesting problem,

We have a series of advertisements being designed in illustrator, placed in these ads are psd's with transparent layers. Upon saving the advertisements to a PDF/X-3 compliance we find black lines running horizontal or vertical through the placed psd images.

There are no vector shapes near these black lines that would potentially cause this issue. See the attached.

Thx

Aaron

First, do you need X3 compliance? If not try saving to compatible with Acrobat 4, which will flatten. If the lines disappear, you can experiment with saving to newer versions. You did not say whether you're using a direct AI export or running the ads through Distiller. If you're saving to eps, or printing ps, with the multiple layer psds with transparency, for Distiller some problems could be introduced.

Have you tried flattening the psds before placing? That usually does wonders for solving a host of problems. The same can be said for using tiff - the old standby - with clipping paths if necessary.

Lastly, if everything WAS ok and this just cropped up, you might try trashing appropriate preferences, whether AI, Acrobat or Distiller, and see if things get better.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook

Thanks for the help, I'll see what I can do to solve the issue.
