hi all, just wondering if anyone can help me with converting colour photos to black and white, but to give them a nice look, when i use greyscale selection it just dosnt look as good as i would like, ive messed around with levels and what not before i convert but not 100% sure, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many people prefer the channel mixer for converting color to B&W. You specify how much of each color channel to use, and check the mono option. The percentages of the channels used should add to 100. You can get different looks by taking more from one of the channels in preference to the others.

Best of all is that you do not throw away your color information. It can be used as an adjustment layer.

I like to do the following:

Image > Mode > Lab Color

In the channels window, drag the alpha channel to the trash bin

Next drag the Alpha 2 channel to the trash bin

Image > Mode > Greyscale
