I am interested in the format of the *.bkf files
produced by NTBackUp. I've made a first pass at
this and can recover data from an uncompressed
file. I'd be very interested if anyone has any
hints or thoughts on the data compression algorithm
which is used. If interested in what I've done
so far see
I'm hampered by the fact I don't own NTBackup, so
if this is abstractly interesting to anyone who would
be willing to send me a small compressed archive
please go to the site above for contact information.

Since my initial post I've learned quite a bit more.
Most importantly, the proper name for this is
the "Microsoft Tape Format", MTF. There is a brief
review article at:

However the full MTF specification which used to be
available from Seagate and source code for a Linux MTF
Tape reader are available at the site below:

The only thing I remain puzzled about is data compression.
I've yet to see or hear of a compressed *.bkf FILE.
However the Sept 2000 spec says LZS221 is a registered method. Still interested in thoughts on this.
