I have recently been attempting to sort out a bizarre problem with Word 2000 (running on Windows 98 Second Edition), which has me stumped.
When I originally went there, as Word 2000 loaded, the splash screen displayed, then the program locked up before it finished loading, displaying the message "The System is dangerously low in resources. Would you like to terminate the following application Microsoft Word [Not responding]" in a grey box in the centre of the screen with Yes, No and Cancel buttons.

Whichever button I clicked the system locked up and needed rebooting afterwards.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word, but it just caused the same problem. After uninstalling Word then removing Word and Office related items in the registry and clutter from the C:\Windows\Temp directory, then rebooted and reinstalled Word.
After I did this, Word worked fine first time, but refused to work at the next time, locking up as it loaded with the hourglass stuck after the splash screen loaded, but refusing to do anything else.

When the system was rebooted again it worked once, and then refused again until it was rebooted.

I eliminated a virus as a cause by running a virus check and finding it clear.
The odd thing is that all other applications (CorelDraw, PhotoShop and Internet Explorer) run properly.

Does anybody have an idea as to what would allow Word to run immediately after the computer starts up but not therafter?

Thanks Dreamboat, it turned out to be a corrupted NORMAL.DOT file.
