Bizarre Issue on FTP login

On IIS 5.0 we are using Windows Integrated auth. and NTFS to limit access to directories on the site.
When a particular user account (only this particular account) attempts to login it fails using the proper credentials. When you look in the ftp log the failed attempt has the username wrong. It does it the same thing every time. (username entered: “xxxxx227” is logged as: “xxxxx22_”) It replaces the 7 with an underscore. I checked other accounts that end in 7 and they work fine.
I have deleted the account and recreated it, as well as rebooted the server.
Just for fun I created the account “xxxxx22_” and attempted to log in as “xxxxx227” and it worked. However, for testing purposes I set the password to”xxxxx227” first but it failed then I changed it to “asdf” and it worked.

I tried the login from 2 different programs to make sure it wasn’t a client issue. I had the same issue with both.
The easy option would be to change the user’s username but that is not an option because the particular application uses the username to find its target folder among other reasons.
Any thoughts on the Issue? It was working fine and Friday it started having this problem.

Thanks in advance!

If it worked fine on Friday then what's changed? Also have you only tried it from one client MACHINE with two apps or from multiple machines?
Try something clean and basic like the FTP.exe command line application from two different machines to rule the client out completely.

Other than that I'm stumped!
