bitmap images

How do I Open an Bitmap file and then edit it??
i need to "shift" the pixels to the left and right...
Also needs to save the bitmap...

have looked around on the net but didnt find anyting helpfull..

hope you all can help me point me on my way...

can you move pixels from the file level left or right
by reading each character from a file and either inserting or deleting to give you the proper positions. If you find out what makes up a pixel in the file you could posibly just edit the file on a character level. Just a thought.
