I am trying to set the bios so the cd rome is frist boot option.I hit f2 the bios comes up i move arrow to boot dev. hit enter. says to select boot dev.with arrow up or down key,i have 3options,1st ,removable dev . 2hard drive dev.3atapi cdrom dev. says to press enter ,use arrow to select cd rom.,hit arrow to hi lite it.it says to hit f 10 to save and exit. i have done this a few times but it go.s back to the same as it was. and will not boot from the cd. the only thing that may be wrong is i can.t move it up to the top.i tried diffrent keys , it stays at 3. i hope you can give some help on this. .I would like to try and reinstall xp,but when i put in the cd,it says i have a newer version on it.sp3, but if i want to put the older one on i have to re boot to the cd. i have a sp 2 desk i can to start updates with. i am trying to learnhow to do this. thans for any info . A noob xbill

back in that BOOT PRIORITY MENU, go to the first device then hit ENTER, it should give you the options to choose which drive, highlight it and hit ENTER once again, it should be now the first BOOT drive, only then hit F10 to exit and save...

xbilll,
When you change it to CD-ROM and exit/save, does the setting stick at all, even for one try?

If it sticks at first then gets reset, then perhaps the battery on your motherboard has died and needs replaced.

far as i can tell it doesn't stick at all.I leave the cd in so when it starts maybe it would work , but no go.When i was looking on the net for info 1 guy said i could start the cd with the command prompt, i can open it but don't now how to use it. maybe it is the battery. IS there much to it,not sure where it at. xbill

Actually based on what you told me, I don't think it's the battery.

only thing that may be wrong is i can.t move it up to the top.i tried diffrent keys , it stays at 3

Use the + and - keys to change its position to 1)

I got it to work it booted up on 2ed hd and did a install, but some thing went wrong. when i rebooted it said no boot and it was halting start up.Unplugged that hd and got it to boot on 1st hd. I whant to re format that dr. Is it possible to open it up and plug it in with comp. still on, or is there some way to do this. i guess i am over my head with this.Reply as soon as you can , thanks so much, xbill

No, you don't want to connect anything with power on.

If you have access to a machine that can download stuff to a floppy you could hit and select a 98se boot disk. That has CD support and from that you can go to the CD and start the installation manually.

wolluf :i need your help again ,as above i got the cump, to boot the xp cd and i reinstalled xp ,i had a sp2 update cd and installed it .went in to boot in - from system set up and edit put this in [boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Disk 1" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Disk 2" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin like you had me do in this link: Put my broadband cd in to set up connection, i put in needed info, said need to restart to finish. then it rebooted. I got this on start up: no boot device detected system halted: i unplugged hd2 the one with new install. Try to boot to hd 1 , got same error.Next plugged in 2 hd . I put the xp cd back in rebooted loads xp set up
then used recover console hit r it asks for pass word. i didn't no it. typed exit. , then it gave me: windows or disk 1 , clicked 1 and it started up on old xp., after doing this a few times.if i clicked on windows it started in the new xp insall. I in stalled partition commander, to see if i could use that.but that called for a reboot,so i got the same error . Put in cd rebooted hit the r selected disk 1 hit exit .partition commander page loads boot configuration is bad.it has a boot in tab not knowing much about this clicked on a few things i hoped would work. then i exited par.com.and it loaded a another P.C screen with a pic. of windows and next to that 2 big ? marks. when i clicked on that it gave me disk or disk2 i clicked 1 to get old xp so if it started i could get your help and it did.Not sure when i reboot that it will work , I was going to unplug 1st hd to see if new xp would boot but i got automatic restart.I am not very good at this so i hope you can help me. I will let you know what happens when i reboot. THANKS so much

I would like to thank every one for all your help, it sure was appreciated big time .going in to the bios so many times, i think i disabled one of the hard drives , any way i clicked on set default so both hds were enabled and rebooted , and now can select disk 1,or, 2 .
