Ok, this is slowly killing me. I had a beautifully running system with 2 HDDs running. Disk 'a' is an 8 GB drive that I was using to run the OS (XP Pro). Disk 'b' is an 80GB Maxtor drive that contains all my data etc. I am/ was using Maxblast 3 DDO to get the system to recognise this large disk.

All was running fine until I contracted some kind of boot sector virus that stopped me running windows. In the attempt to fix this I removed the MaxBlast 3 DDO from the disks (amongst various other things). Fortunately, I managed to get the system up and running again (albeit with a new OS installation and much lossed data).

HOWEVER, although the data on my large HDD is still intact, I cannot get windows to recognise it.

I have updated the BIOS on my ASROCK K7S8X m/b with no joy.

I run Maxtor's MaxBlast3 and it recognises the HDD as 80 GB but the options to install the DDO are all greyed out.

I ran EZ-Drive but this only reconises the HDD as 32GB (as does the BIOS setup). Installing EZ-BIOS was no help either.

Any help would be hugely appreciated

I'm not sure, but how was it partitioned/formated .. as a dynamic or basic disk? and how is it detecting it now

Just out of curiosity, did you format the large drive or did you leave it alone during this whole ordeal? Search through more help at

;) thank you. I left the large drive alone! I resolved the issue by first installing EZ-BIOS on the drives and then running MAXBLAST3. I was then given the option of updating the MBR & DDO to maxblast3 which worked! Most bizarre. I am now battling with many new issues with a new install of XP!!

You have completely thrown me! The Asrock K7S8X is a fairly new (less than 18months old) motherboard that I have used personally in the recent past and that has no issues at all recognising 80GB HDD's and larger for that matter (infact the latest 2.6 bios supports even the latest Sempron 3.0+ CPU which has only been out a few months)
You should have no need for any third party tools in order for this motherboards bios to recognise a standard maxtor 80gig drive, Diamondmax Plus9?

I just wonder why others havn't pointed this out sooner?

Also I would suggest that you shouldn't be using the much older ATA66/100 5,400 disk as the boot drive, it would certainly be much quicker and probably safer to use the newer 80gig ATA 133 drive as boot.

Thankyou Paparazi. I did think that the MB should detect the large hard disk and am completely baffled as to why I have to use Maxblast, but hey, it fixes the problem ;) And yes, it's about time I sorted out installing the OS onto the Maxtor. Backup and wonderful lengthy install process take #6 here we come.....
