bios reconises but won't assign a drive letter to new second hd

can someone tell me how to assign my second hd a letter

You have to partition and format it first. Then a drive letter will be assigned automatically.

The drive letter is assigned in the operating system NOT the BIOS !

What system are you running ?
What version of windows ?
Have you formatted the drive ?

I had this problem once when adding a drive with information on it to a win2k machine. I had to go to disk management in administrative tools and assign a drive letter to it then it worked fine.
