You're right, Hitachi no longer offers overlay software for download. If you haven't already purchased the drive (or can return it) check other manufacturers. Western Digital drives will work with Data Lifeguard Tools, Maxtor drives work with Maxblast software, and Seagate with Disk Wizard. Each of them include the ability to install a drive overlay. Unfortunately, you can't use them with a Hitachi drive. Another option is to purchase Ontrack Disk Manager.
I cant answer the above question, but i can tell you that its best to avoid overlay software. They stopped using it for a reason, its no good and unravels in short order and leaves a mess behind. Thats just my opinion, i gave up on overlay and went to pci controller cards. Needless to say you dont have that option with a notebook, but how about a bios update for your notebook? Or get a hard drive that your bios can handle would be another plan.
Thanks Wolluf, years ago i tried and tried with overlay only to find it, like i said, unravel down the road. And its people like you, with more experience, who have said time and time again: overlay is a waste of time. Its a software program that just simply failed. I had already given up on it but when you hear 100 people say the same thing, its time to listen! At least i knew it wasnt me doing it wrong!
Sorry, Stormblind, but I bet thats the answer you are going to get no matter where you go for help on this.
I use a 1998 Gateway SOLO 2500. Originally came with with Win 95, on 2.16 gig drive. I replaced it with a new 30 gig drive with no problem. What size is the old harddrive? What laptop are we talking about?
