In my BIOS setup I do not see a hard drive as on the "Primary IDE Master" as it should be; primary ide master is listed as "ATAPI CDROM" (CD/DVD is attached as slave); main IDE slave in BIOS says "not detected" !! (power works as door opens).

Secondary IDE is correctly and properly listed as "Secondary IDE Master" for hard drive without any slave.

ChillLead,
Your primary ide device may be jumpered wrong, unplugged or dead.

Not plugged in with the end connector.
And the CD-Rom may not be plugged as CS.

Cable select choice requires master on the end, slave in the middle and the blue connector to the M/B.

connections are correct as hd master and cd/dvd slave (hd on end, cd/dvd on middle); could be jumpers, but the
*%$&@!^ verbiage with the product (+ the online documentation) is vague and reads duplicitously.

update: hd is jumpered as cable select enabled. Maxtor quickview pata 133 drive. jumper schematic on the device has a dedicated slave setting (hd as master). jumper schematic online indicates a CLJ setting. what is a CLJ setting?

WoooHoooo, problem solved: hd's jumpered properly, it was the cd/dvd that was jumpered as master while attached on the ide cable as slave.
