Need help with the following error in WIN XP. On boot-up after reaching the desktop an error message box reads:

"error 10048 in function bind. Address already in use."

This error is reported, I believe, by the program mosso.exe. Does anyone have knowledge on this?

Thanks,

The error means, in plain english, that the port is already assigned to another program.

I have no idea what "mosso.exe" might be, but it is not a part of the XP OS.

. Do you find (Start, Run, MSCONFIG) that there are two entries for a startup program? It is possible that inadvertantly a legitimate startup program requiring a LISTENING port under TCP/IP is being run twice;

. Otherwise, run both the Trend Micro and Panda online AV scans from smah's FAQ: faq760-3862

. Follow that with a thorough use of FAQ608-4650

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I have a machine that's suffering from a couple of programs that I can not remove using "add/remove" programs in win xp. They are called IRC and mIRC, even in 'safe mode'. It is my belief that they may have something to do with two services trying to use the same port to listen although I may be wrong about this. This machine had (I hope it's gone) the Backdoor.HackDefender virus on it along with many other that I cleared with NAV. The IRC programs are apparently Internet Chat Room stuff I would like to get rid of. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks, again.

That would be good except there is not a folder or file, hidden or otherwise, on the drive with that name. In safe mode I can get rid of the entries in the registry and re-boot back to safe mode and the entries are still absent but on a normal boot, they get put back in. That action is what I would like to stop. On a normal boot about five little message boxes with no text are displayed and I am sure they are associated with mIRC. I can click each ones' OK box and they go away but the mIRC program shows up in the registry and in the "add/remove" programs listing but from here it can not be removed.
