Having problems starting named.
Error: couldn't open pid file 'var/run/named/named.pid;permission denied

What's the remedy??

Hi,

Permissions on mine (Bind 9.1.3-3) look like this :

-rw-r--r-- 1 named named 4 Aug 9 07:17 /var/run/named/named.pid

If yours are different change them as root :

chmod 644 /var/run/named/named.pid

chown named.named /var/run/named/named.pid

(The startup script runs named with the '-u named' - user named - option so the permissions have to be right for that user).

P.S. Did u see my last reply on the other thread ?

Hi ifincham,

You should have bet the full 100% with regard to named not actually running (ip confusion thread). Now after changing permissions to write on the named dir named now runs.
I can now dig at 127.0.0.1 works fine. I must have other problems with my named.conf or zone files because I still cannot serve up my domain on the net.
Thanks for your help! Joe
