that depends on the line provider, but usually there is a circuit number that you need for service and then the main phone number is used for billing of the circuit.

You will probably see a local loop charge (the charge for the circuit itself). It could be billed to the LEC ID or (if the circuit was installed on behalf of an IXC or CLEC) the circuit ID assigned by the service provider.
Then you would see charges for calls (as spelled out in the contract that was signed with the provider) and any applicable taxes & fees.
Each one does the billing a little different, depending how the service(s) was(were) setup in the beginning. Dexman's explanation mirrors mine for the most part.
