hi all

i just bought a nisis surround sound speaker system that came with a 5.1 channel pci sound card

i followed all the instructions, installed the sound card, then plugged in the speakers and i get this really loud inteference sound, like you get on a mobile phone. its constant, and gets louder and more intense when i move the mouse.

any ideas folks?

thanks

lauren

If the computer has sound on the motherboard, have you disabled it in the bios? Have you installed drivers for the sound card?

hi

i installed the drivers for the new soundcard, and removed them for the old one.

no sure about the bios...how do i access that

thanks for your help!

Re-setting the bios varies. The best way to find out is to go to the motherboard mfgrs website and get the instructions for your specific motherboard.
Usually you will find, on the motherboard, a coin battery and beside that you will find 3 pins with a jumper on 2 of them. You usually unhook power from wall, take out battery and move the jumper over one pin. Leave it for a few minutes and put jumper back where it was, put battery back in and hook up power to wall and boot up. But some are different, ECS motherboards stands out as one that is different.

A guess is that the mouse and the sound card are probably competing for the same system resources, especially if the system BIOS has reserved an IRQ for the integrated sound card. Check in System Properties (Windows Key+Break), Hardware to see what resources have been allocated to each device. As Garebo has suggested, open the BIOS and see if it is disabled and that nothing is reserved for it.
