i just bought a new harddisk maxtor diamond plus 160 Gb and installed it on my XP Computer as Secondary master. The problem is when the free capacity was only about 500M.b left and when i restarted the computer the drive become unformatted. I have to format it again. does Xp not supported big drive capacity?

XP-SP1 on up, supports anything. I think this is a coincidence. Even if you put this drive in an old 486, it would still be seen (but as a smaller drive). Did you just jumper (and install) as Master, or are you trying to boot an OS off this disk?

Well it's happened for three times so i think it's not a coincidence. The disk is just for data only, while my OS i install it on my 80 Gb Maxtor.

If you are using FAT, make sure it's FAT32 and not FAT16. Also keep in mind that XP is limited to the size of one partition in FAT32.

Sorry, meant to say that XP is limited when creating FAT32 partitions. Larger ones that are created elsewhere can be read fine in XP.
