I will have to design a "big" database :
- around 250 tables
- between 3 and 4Gb of data
- Mainly read-only access

I search infos from people who have experiment that size of database with MySql. If you are in this case, I would like to know if you encountered problem due to limitation of MySql in that context.

TIA
Phil

MySQL should have no trouble with a database that size, assuming your hardware and operating system can handle it. My own main database is over 2GB, and has never given any size-related problems. If you're expecting heavy traffic or big queries, you might want to do some tuning of variables related to caches, to maximise performance.

Thank you for your answer.

The MySql server might be Windows OS equipped.

How many tables contains your database ?

Regards,

Fred

Phil/Fred:

My own databases don't have many tables, maybe 20 each, but 250 should be no problem.

We have about 10GB worth of data spread across a MySQL cluster . Lightning fast and the hardware isn't smashingly spectacular.

Regards number of tables, one of the databases is comprised of 125 tables. Doesn't cause MySQL to hiccup in the least.

So your 250 tables should be a cakewalk. Have fun!

BTW MySQL 5 is buggy in Win32 environments, stick with the 4.1 product if you plan to be on Win32, 5.03 if you can put it on Linux or other Unix variants.
