Big Data Management QUERYS in Informix 7.3.1

I have a IDS 7.3.1 WNT4.0
I make some querys and they give a big quantity of records. When a litle number of clientes access to the server and make these querys, the server's CPU is collapsed. This only occurs when the result of the query is big. My question is:

Somebody can help me to optimize the server response? isther some paramete than controls the intermediate buffer between the server nad the clients,..etc?
