Okay, I'm online, looking for a map of a city. I click to submit the address and CLUNK! I hear the hard drive 'needle' fall. Never had a problem before. BSOD with WRITE ERROR ON DRIVE C. I return to Windows (98se): unresponsive. CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing of courrse. 20 minutes later, I turned it off.

I reboot and get the error "No operating system installed". Nuts. I try to use a boot disk, but I find out later that the BIOS doesn't recognize the master hard drive at all.

Any ideas as to how I can reclaim my system? I've never dealt with something of this nature before. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The clunk is probably the heads hitting the limit block. You probably have lost your hard drive.
If so , you replace the hard drive and reload the operating system. Ed Fair

yeah, I figured as much. Do you think I could salvage the data in any way? Should I bother connecting it to another PC?

Unlikely to help. But for your own peace of mind try it.
Generally , the only hope at this time is a professional data recovery company, with clean room, and the parts to swap out. Ed Fair
