Hi All,

I have been unable to start BGP session in 2500 series and kept getting the following error messages.

routerA(config)# router bgp 40
routerA(config)# ---> it doesn't switch to router configuration mode.

and when I check the logfile this is what I found

00:05:25 % Sys-2-MallocFail = Memory allocation of 65496 bytes failed from 0x319FD68, pool processor alignment 0
-Process = "Exec", ipl = 0, pid = 2
-Traceback = 31A1C52 31A3330 319FD70 319FF86 33209F8 333BE8E
3253252 3253782 214A7D4 315DCD1

Any clue..and Why is Malloc able to allocate memory space for OSPF and other routing protocols and not for BGP in the same Router. I have another router same type but able to configure BGP without any problem

Regards
Baria.

I have seen several cases where routers can run other protocols but fail with BGP (even when the cisco website suggests it can be done).
The first thing I would do is check the version of Cisco IOS you are using, it MAY help for you to re-install the same one - but personally, I would look to install another one (even a lower level if need be).
If your 'working' router has the same IOS version (please make sure this is the case) then it may be some sort of memory leak. Certainly, BGP is far more processor/memory intensive then most other protocols so if anything pushes your router it will be BGP.
I do not think a proper 25xx machine should have an issue running BGP - again though, it may be worth checking - especially if it is an older model.

The same kind of thing happened to me earlier, what IOS is your 25xx running ?

I'd try to upgrade it to the latest stable version.

cheers,
