I asked Dell support about that. The controllers will still work with whatever drive you want to throw in there. Just Dell isn't going to support you if you don't buy their drives.

Yes, a couple weeks back Dell reversed the decision, they have a firmware revision which allows any drive use; not sure if it has been released yet. As far as I am concerned I could care less about support, never called on a raid issue, aside from this googling would generally give all the support needed
