I am creating a logo consisting of a shape from which several closed paths (in this case outlined text) have been knocked out. Trying to get a 3D effect I get the warning “Bevel self-intersection may have occurred.” Is there a way of working around the self-intersection, i.e. having the line of letters treated as a unit, rather than having the effect applied to each one independently and thus interfering with its neighbour?

Since they're outlines, what happens if you group them?

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

It's a simple shape with the word 'resources' knocked out of it. So it's a single closed path with holes in. The bowls of the e and o complicate matters as closed paths themselves but if you ignore that and imagine 'rsurcs' instead the principle will hold. The effect is applied to the single shape, not the letter outlines. Selecting the shape highlights the whole thing including the letterforms, so there's nothing to group.
