I'm about to replace my 4.11 server on a small, singler server network. In reading different forums I've seen information on three different approaches. 1) Reintall netware and back-up software then restore from a full backup of old server; 2) Use a product like Backup Exec's Intelligent Disaster Recovery; 3) Physically install the drive containing SYS in the new server, copy the DOS partition, copy SYS to new volume NEWSYS, use TCOPY2.EXE to transfer rights, dismount and rename the SYS volumes appropriately, run DSMAINT to restore NDS. I'm a Netware novice so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Backupexec's IDR product will only work on "Like" servers. The servers must be an exact hardware mirror of each other. I would not recommend using this product. You might want to consider doing a migration where you setup the new server from scratch. Then using the migration tool, you can copy NDS and Data from old server onto the new one.

You can probably do it any of the three ways. However options 2 & 3 would leave you with disk and LAN drivers from the original server which will probably be different on the new server, so you would have to change them manually.

I would tend to install Netware, etc. The best TIDs at support.novell.com to step you through the process is 10027322.

The data restore depends on the tape drive of the new server being able to read tapes from the old. You should run a test of this beforehand.

On a smaller server, I would suggest a fresh install. We done this a while back. Man, do I wish I had done a fresh install. I used Novell's Migration Wizard to a brand new server. Even then, there were multiple issues.

The previous messages are exactly correct. If you use the products mentioned, you need an exact copy (hardware/versions/etc) in order for it to work sucessfully.

As far as time involved, I would say it will take you just as long if you set up the new server from scratch, compared to migrating from the old one, and trouble shooting all the new hardware abends, issues and the like.

Good Luck.

I would install novell fresh on new server.
Install patch's to new server.
I would not install license unless you have seperate licence. Novell will allow you to have two connections at one time.

I would install NDS and add to your current tree.

Copy data over to new server.
You don't need Novell directories
change login script to reflect new file locations.
make new server primary timer server and old one secondary.
remove License form old
install license to new server.
remove old server from network
use ndsmgr to remove server from tree.

Thanks Mark. Does this mean that both servers can exist at the same time until the licensing is installed? If so, can I then copy the data accross the wire rather than from backup?

Yes, since Novell will allow two connections to a server without license. I always connect a pc and map out drives to each server and move data or restore via backup. After data is on server remove license or just shut down old server. Install License to new server.
