DHTML, but if you're cool with that, you're in business. If you're not, then I fear you're in trouble as there is no supplied control that will give you the ability to narrow it any further than the first letter.
this is perfect! i have no dhtml experience, but i am quite fluent with HTML, C, VFP, ect, so maybe i can figure it out.....question, will one dtml element work on a regular html page?

It'll work fine, as long as your users' browser supports it -- IE 5.x, NS4.x -- which covers the VAST majority of web surfers... for the others... I have a really hard time feeling sorry for them, since they are free downloads. ;-)
side note, i am using vfp to build these drop down lists, the "value" clause of the options is very important, with this dhtml list, will i be able to retain my value tags?

I really don't know much about it, but I have heard others rave about it, which is why I suggested it. You might post over in the javascript forum -- jaredn frequents that forum, so he would be better able to answer your questions.
