What is the best way to move a folder tree from one server to another win2k3 server and retain all the shares and security settings? I've seen some references to robocopy but it looks like it can copy the security settings but not the share settings. Will windows backup do it?

can anybody point me in the right direction?

thanks

Robocopy from the Windows Resource Kit can not only copy the stuff over, but it can mirror the data, making the cutover quite easy. It does everything but the shares.

Microsoft has the File Server Migration Tool that will do everything including the shares, but tends to be a bit more involved.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

thanks, ill take a look at that file server migration tool, that might be worth figuring out.
