I wish to use the hard drive from my old PC in my new one, as a slave (no OS). Preferably I'd like one partition to store backup images of the C drive, and another just to store data.

Before I took it out of my old PC I *think* I wiped all the data from it using the XP installation disk. I remember it warning me I'd lose all the data and me agreeing to it, but after that there wasn't the delay I was expecting it would need to erase. It was showing I had one partition, but I'm not sure whether I've really wiped all the data or whether I still really have a usable partition or what! The drive also used to be FAT32, but I'd like to change it to NTFS if possible and split the drive into two partitions.

So... my question is what do I do now? Do I set the jumper to Slave, plug it in and see what happens? Do I need to enter the BIOS as the PC starts up to see if the drive is detected? Do I need to boot as normal then use XP's Computer Management thingy to sort out the partitions and file system?

Many thanks.

Yes , set 2nd hd jumper to slave & boot up .
On boot up , hit the pause button .& check if the 2nd hd has been accepted .
Press the space bar to move off pause .

If the drive has not been accepted , you may have to change a jumper on the 1st hd to the master with slave position ( if the instructions on the drive are unclear , trial & error is needed )

No need to bolt the drives into the chassis , just leave them outside the case .

XP should be able to handle the rest .

Installing a Second Hard Drive; Demonstrated
with the Maxtor 13.6 GB DiamondMax Plus .

Also , a well written site which shows this step with good illustrations on
adding a 2nd Hard Drive.
