Hi again. I have a client who wishes to access their office pc from home. What in your experience, is the most reliable way to connect like this. I want something thats not too complicated. vpn vnc, bespoke software? I dont want to use logmein as i dont like the fact that you have to go through them to log in. Also, is it possible to connect to their file server without logging on as a user, ie, can I log in anonymously?(xp home, i know i know, ive told them, they wont listen!)Thank for any leads...

It depends on your firewall. I am not a VPN expert, but if you have a firewall running on your servers (which i assume you do) you'd probably want VPN.

Thanks,
Andrew

Do you know any good links to help me learn how to set up a vpn at all? Im using NAT on the router and zone alarm on the clients.

Honestly I have no idea, i';ve never set it up.

Thanks,
Andrew

We use a SonicWall SSL-VPN. It was easy to setup, and our users can connect through any computer that has internet access. They can also perform a remote desktop to the office pc through it. It was relativley in-expensive (1900)

Uncanny - I was about to ask something along the same lines. Someone has a wireless router connected to the internet, with a couple of workstations hooked up and online. They hve an offline fileserver and workstation on a seperate network for security. However they want to access their fileserver from home to work remotely. If it was connected to the router it would be online, and they could use remote desktop connection to work on it. It's XP pro I think, not a server. But then the fileserver would be online and vulnerable. What is the best way to make it not so? Some way of allowing only RDC ports to it on the router? Using VPN? I've not played with that much so all ideas welcome. I'll make this it's own post perhaps later

One word for ya logmein.com. Free to use 65 to buy works pretty good and its similar to an ssl vpn

That's enough without looking further to put me off the idea?

Through our sonicwall, i can map drives from the office network to my pc at home, or browse the network and pc's.
I can upload/download files etc. I can even leave my pc at home up and running with the ssl-vpn tunnel on, then when I get to work, I can remote desktop to my pc at home from work. I would recommend the sonicwall, go to
and check it out (SSL-VPN 2000).
