Hi,

I am looking for alternative ways to copy and restore a database backup from SF to NY. I tried using robocopy to copy the backup, but it was very very slow and would have taken about 16 hours to complete. That doesn't work.

I am asking for people's input and suggestion for how to best accomplish this, and if they have any 3rd party tool recommendations.

THANKS MUCH

hi,

How BIG is your backup file ?
is it a .BAK file ?

You could always use Quest Litespeed to back it up - it compresses it and is also a lot quicker than native backup. that would mean that robocopy could transfer it quicker.

You would have to have litespeed at the other end to restore it though...

Hi,

This is not a very large database if the .BAK is not zipped.

<<copy and restore a database backup from SF to NY>>
Does it mean that you want to copy and restore a database backup from San Francisco to New-York ?

Is yes,

you can ZIP de .BAK file and attache it to an "email" and send it to someone in New-York where he/she can restore it.

you can ZIP de .BAK file and attache it to an "email" and send it to someone in New-York and use a "netmeeting" with someone in New-york to help him to restore the database.

You can upload the .BAK on a FTP site where someone in New-York can download the .BAK and restore it.

Hope this help

25MB is tiny!!
Are the servers on the same network, i.e. can you see one server from the other?

I regularly throw a couple of GB around our network (upsets my network guys though)

Option 1: Purchase 2 copies of LiteSpeed. Backup the database with LiteSpeed, make a tape of the backup and send it overnight to the other site with a copy of LiteSpeed. have them restore it.

Option 2: Backup the database, compress it, put it on a tape and overnight it.

Also, once you've done the backup you could send it over the network during non-peak hours, but it's gonna take a while.
