Best way to brighten up dark videos

Scenerio
- Capturing a video footage with low light condition
- Subject is fairly visible but with a dark background

Problem
When I increase the brightness a white haze over the video picture would appear.

Question
Is there a way to enhance a dark video while maintaining the original background detail? Basically I would like to achieve a presentable normal light video output.I am new to this so if anyone can please give me a step by step guide on how to best solve this type of problem.

You should try using LEVELS before bright/cont. You'll have a little more control over the histogram that way.

You could also try to use transfer modes to correct the color.

Of course, if you have AE 6.5, there's a built in color tool : COLOR FINESSE which is really excellent, and the closest thing I've seen to Discreet's color tools

I only have AE version 5 -COLOR FINESSE not included but I'll try out LEVELS and see what it does.
