Best used system for a small motel

A lot of these littl motels her ein town use Mitel. They are getting old and I do not work on them. They use a simple auto attendant and sometimes voice mail. Local calling only no rebilling.

I had thought about gearing up on Mitel parts and training myself on these system so I can maintain them. Most were put in place via the old Bell System many years ago.

They seem simple enough and I like that they are so very compact with station cards and trunk cards.

I install Avaya Partner and Nortel MICS. Most of these samll motels are from 20 to maybe at most 150 rooms.

Any suggestions for Mitel or any other proowned systems that are easy to install and maintain.

These businesses never have a lot of money so I need to stick with used equipment.

Any Mitel resourses for me to look at like manuals or over the phone paid vendor support so i can train my self in the field.
 
I prefer nortel OPT11 systems you can get them failly cheap in the gray market. thay are simple to program. and can be expanded to 600 sets or more, and you can use a callpilot for voice mail.or a meridian mail.
 
What is the gray market vendor costs lets say for about 120 analog SLS stations?

Also what is te interface for programming. I have been use to programming via a system set.
 
I have actually worked on both the Mitel and Nortel systems. I would say the best one for hotel/motel applications is the Mitel. It is also easier to program in my mind.

Both systems can be administered using a terminal emulation program like HyperTerminal or Procom Plus.

Both systems can be found on the grey market fairly cheap. If VM is required, then I know that the Mitel system will pretty much run any VM system that uses Analog ports. The Nortel probably will too, I just haven't done it.

The one problem you will most likely run into with the Mitel is finding install/maintenance documentation. Mitel does not readily make this info available to the general public because it's business model is to train and support vendors/dealers in your area. With patience, you should be able to make use of internet searches with success. Once you get into the programming a couple of times, it gets pretty easy to navigate. The Mitel programming interface is like a menu so you see the options.

The Nortel can be a bit more tricky with programming. You need a list of the loads (forms) and what each one does in order to navigate. It is command line programming, not menu programming like the Mitel.

I have to agree with Patterson on this. I am certified on both Nortel Meridian and Mitel systems and would recommend the Mitel in a hotel/motel environment. The system is fairly easy to learn and having menu choices helps re-enforce what you learn whereas the Nortel system pretty much requires that you have the manuals handy until you become proficient in their programming.

I understand that Mitel use to be the system of choice for the old Bell System for Hotel / Motel. Is this ture?
 
Like any PBX, once you understand it, none are all too difficult. Mitel has owned the smallish hotel/motel market for 20+ years - and for a reason. They have a good feature set for that market at a low cost.
As an investment, buy a used SX200 and play with it.

I think I will take your advise. There are some on eBay real cheap that I can bring in house so I can get the basics down before I install one.

BTW one of the small sites I was at this week had a small Mitel and did not have a Recp. console. They used a Viking AA to answer and switch calls to the rooms.

Merlin Magix and Messaging?? They are also coming of age and if you are going the Avaya product line then for small Motel/Hotel (up to 48 Extensions including Console and an extension for the debit) you are way better of with the Partner system. Easier to handle for the users and with a DXD card you don't need a Voicemail. Only downside for Partners is that you can not renumber the extensions they start at 10 (Console) and go up from there.

@djtt the 2-port auto attendant for small properties is a standard of the ma and pa motel. I have seen and used two products, EZ Advantage and CMP CallExtend

The CMP product shows up on the secondary market a lot. Both units are a tad pricey for a 2-port box, but they are reliable and they do the job.
