I have been having trouble toning out CAT 6 and above with my trusty old toner. Seems like the higher Cat rating I go the harder it is to hear the tone. I have to get right down on the cable pair to hear it. Must be the jacket or sheilding.

Can anyone recoment a powerfull and reliable toner tracer unit that you have been pleased with?
Thanks

Why must it have audible tones? My Siemens cable tester, tests everything I throw at it. No noise, no buzz, just quiet. Nice little LCD to let you know what is good, and not. It does send a tone by the way, just no speaker to hear it, which is okay with me. Link Of course you get what you pay for, and it works great, Batteries last a long time.

The trick when toning Cat-5 and 6 is to split pairs being toned. Grab the White/Orange conductor and the Brown/White conductor. Use your Banjo adapter if the cables are already terminated.

Thanks. What does splitting do?

What does splitting do?

It works. I think a single pair will cancel itself out. I often split pairs to tone ugly existing wiring that has been in place for ever. My toner has an option to choose which wires to tone on, it comes in really handy on terminated drops.

mountainbear what is the model of the toner that you use?

Yes, model number please.

I had and loved my progressive wand and toner

When that one broke a few years ago I purchased the fluke set which has worked great for me as well

I use a "link Master Pro xl" made by Ideal. I bought it several years ago. Sorry for the wrong info, It can Not tone any two wires without using alligator clips but it can tone any pair, all 8 or any single wire. A few features I love are:
8 remotes for testing 8 data drops at a time.
Beeps on proper termination
set tone to any pair of wires, all 8 wires or one single wire
Length shown during wire map, saves time.
Also has coax remotes
