hi all,

For 2000,

I've been just getting by with the built-in backup/restore tool. It certainly has it's limitations. We sometimes need to restore only 1 table but have to restore the entire db then pull-off that single object.

I'm interested in knowing of better backup tools you all have used.

Thanks. John

Both Red-Gate and Quest Software have some very good backup tools. My favorite is LiteSpeed by Quest. I get about 85% compression and 1/3 backup times.

Bottom line, with SQL Server 2000 I don't think there is anything that will restore just one table. It's all or nothing. SQL Server 2005 supposedly can do single table restore (Disclaimer, I am only beginning to learn 2005).

Well that's not what I was hoping to hear. I just assumed some of these tools would be able to restore individual objects :(

The increased speed and compression are really secondary to us.

I still plan to try LiteSpeed, Paul. Thnaks to both for the info.

Here are the feature for LiteSpeed.
LiteSpeed for SQL Server Enterprise includes all of the standard LiteSpeed features: integrated log shipping, transparent integration using Native Command Substitution (NCS)*; double-click restore; the ability to attach files to your back-up allowing you to document your archives; and CLI (Command Line Interface) so you can use LiteSpeed's command line and query scripting capabilities to integrate into an existing enterprise backup solution.

LiteSpeed for SQL Server Enterprise features additional data security and table level recovery features. The layered encryption feature has built-in RC2, RC4, AES, 3DES key encryptions to safeguard and protect data from unauthorized access.
IMO it's the best 3rd party backup tool for SQL Server.
