Any suggestions as to what would be a good piece of software to use for a network database? My requirements are as follows:
1. Inventory list of all computers with the ability to have a photograph of each machine attached to the record.
2. A free form text file that will contain dated entries of what I did during the day, with a way to search for specific problems that may have occured. This would be like a service call record or a database of resolved problems.
3. The ability to integrate with a drawing of some sort of the network, possibly even showing the location of each machine/printer/server, etc.

Do I need PowerPoint? Visual FoxPro? Or Visio? Or something else?

Thanks,

Since it's a database question, maybe get more answers in one of the 7 or so Access forums such as:
Microsoft: Access Other topics

In fact, most of your questions have been all ready addressed in these forums.

Now if you don't have any Access experience, be forewarned that you have a long learning curve ahead of you.

Oh yeah, Access can do all of what you asked.

Forgot to mention - if you have Access, it's usually shipped with a sample database called Northwind.mdb
If you open it and click on Categories, you'll see examples of pictures being used.

By the way, do you mean INTRAnet or INTERnet?

Thanks. Yes, we have Office Pro, so I do have Access.

It sounds like you're looking for an asset tracking software. There is much software specifically for this purpose & MS Office might not be the right thing for you. Google around a bit, you might find something like this is already available.

Yeah, something off the shelf might be a better choice. But it could be developed if that's what you want.

You want asset management and a call center ? And facilites management ?

Wow. Get ready to spend some money ;)

How many assets ? What is the call centers volume ? How many physical locations ?

Thanks for all the replies. Seems I need to do some research. No, we don't need a call center, I was just wanting to track problems I encountered, and how I resolved them so that I could refer back to them later if the same problem occured again. We have one physical location. As for the asset management, we probably have around 200 devices total, not many. Small network. Only 50 users.

Thanks.

I see. Then yeah, maybe Access is a good solution for you.

200 devices and 50 users is perfect for an Access application. Heck, Access 2007 has an Asset Tracking Template DB that may server your needs.

I agree with Tyrone. A couple of jobs ago, I used the Access 2000 Asset Tracking template for for exactly this purpose.

Spend a few minutes in the wizard and you will end up with a full application that will probably do what you need with only minor modifications.
