Like nearly every broad question such as this, it is both subjective, and it depends. For the firewall, are you protecting your home computer or the corporate network that has irreplacable Intellectual Property on it? Are you protecting 1 or 1,000 computers? Do you have internet accessible computers or are you just protecting computers that will need access to the internet outbound?

Many of the same questions apply to the antivirus software. Things like quarantining email at the email server, or just protecting a single workstation.

I know that my answers would change quite a bit based on your answers.

Of course I left out the most important question of all. How much are willing to spend on each?
