Promotions are run to stimulate future sales. For example a discount is offered for orders of summer products during the winter. When the orders are taken a future ship date is set to sometime in the summer. The problem of course is that the qty is allocated causing backorders on these items for the currently shipping orders.

Obviously, any order that is entered creates an allocation regardless of the ship date. You're correct, this can cause problems as the allocation is now, whereas the order may not be scheduled to ship for months. That's why Macola provides ATP, and MRP. Unfortunately, if you do not want the allocation to 'hit' at the time the order is placed, your only option is to not enter the order....

Have you considered placing your future orders as quotes? That way the allocation wouldn't 'hit' until the quote is converted to an order. You can then control this, by timing the quote to order conversion process so that the allocation 'hits' at the appropriate time. You could also use Crystal (or event manager) to notify you of quotes that need to be converted as they get closer to shipping time.

Kudos on the Event Manager suggestion. I just used this tool to proavtively address a number of issues. For those of you who have not seen this, please get a demo as soon as you can.

Blanket orders can also be used to put orders into the system without creating allocations. You then release the blanket when you are ready to ship.
