To all out there....
I am trying to improve the configuration of a K580 Server running a Oracle 7.3.4.4 with 1000 Logins.
After reboot I always end up only having about 1.6Gb of freemem (according to "top") and this is quickly running out
I believe the configuration is wrong...but cannot find the cause

Ideas please....

Hi there,

That's a large and (I would imagine) busy machine you have there.

Couple of questions:

1 What are you trying to improve (some batch process? total throughput? user reponse time?) and do you have a target eg. "Overnight processing must be completed before 6am" or "Average response time for an agreed set of user transactions must be less than 1.5 seconds"

2 Has the system got slower recently?

3 What change(s) were made just before the system got slower?

4 How many Oracle instances (databases) are running on the machine?

5 How large are the Oracle SGA's?

6 Is the UNIX filesystem cache set to a specific size or is it at the default (variable) setting?

7 What's the total memory in the system?

8 How many CPU's?

9 What is the disk configuration on the machine?

<smile> slightly more than a couple of questions....

1, 2 & 3 are probably the most important and the most difficult to answer -- but don't hang back on the other details because you can't answer 1,2 & 3 straightaway.

Some discussion going on via email as this is such a large question. Summaries of each point discussed will be posted.
