I have been working with adobe ptshp and painter 5(Metacrations) for the last 3 years and have been cursing the mouse for about the same amount of time. The mouse I'm using came with the system(Packard Bell). It works fine, but not for graphics--the tracking ball is located in the heel of the mouse(roughly centered in the middle of your palm) which makes control very difficult. It's like trying to sign your name with the point of the pen in the middle of your palm.--Any suggestions as to what I should look for in buying a new mouse-(ex. track ball location, track ball size??

A stylus is of course your best bet for 'painterly type strokes' but if you must use a mouse, I am very happy with logitec intella mice. They are nice and ergonomic for average sized hands and smaller. The pads make it glide quite nicely and the infrared resolution makes the cursur smooth as glass on screen, great for those little tweeks. I have the cordless model which I do not recomend, it is a total battery hog. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
