Hi all,
Not too relevant to this forum - but hopefully someone can help. I am trying to find some general resources that can advise on which type/size monitors are best for your eyes. I have a user using a 15" CRT who is suffering from eye strain and could potentially give her a 17" CRT or 19" TFT.

Thanks very much.

That ones easy!
19TFT (equivelent to 21inch CRT, just about, in size)
So the TFT is much bigger than the 17inch CRT alternative.
Also TFT's by there very nature are consdered better on the eyes (illuminated diodes as compared to tube)
If it were the other way around (19inch CRT, 17inch TFT) the answer would still have been the same, TFT.

Thanks Martin. Presumably also a nice resolution on the TFT as well?

Yes, expect a fairly high resolution of 1280x1024 or higher as the native resolution of the TFT. Although you can adjust to other resolutions, only the native one gives the sharpest output.

CRT's generally rate higher in overall quality (especially when it comes to text), but LCD's strain the eyes less and do a decent job with graphics (virtually indisguishable to CRT's when using a TFT display).

Get a TFT that has a DVI interface to get the best image quality.

As a quick fix for now, check the refresh rate in the display settings. For myself, I cannot look at a 60Hz refresh rate, and when an area of the monitor is pure white, it hurts my eyes a lot. On my own monitor I use 85Hz.

Sometimes especially with Win98, you cannot adjust the refresh rate, and if that is the case, switch the monitor driver to the "standard 1024x768 75Hz" driver provided with Win98.

How old is the monitor? It may not be able to accept a real high resolution. Try 75 first, if the monitor goes "crazy", just wait - in 15 seconds it will go back to where you started. 60 cycle is the hardest to put up with, if you look "off to the side" (looking out of the corner of your eye), you can actually see the flicker caused by the lights in the room. I forget which is which, but between the monitor and lights, one is 60 cycle and the other is 59.9 cycle. Oops, showing my age, it's not "cycles" anymore - it's "hertz".

Thanks guys - all really useful info.
