First, I have a PIX 501 with ver 6.3.

I have the files that I tftp'd via the PDM to some file, lets say firewall.cfg. When I grab a new firewall out of the box, connect a serial cable to it, start up hyperterminal, and select the file transfer, it gets to a certain point, then bombs out. I end up breaking the config file into 3 smaller files and have to transfer them in one at a time.

What is the best method for taking a pix, fresh out of the box, and restoring a saved config file?

I ask this because I am writing a "disaster recovery" procedure to restore the config of a firewall in the event it fails.

I just copy the entire config text and paste it in via an emulator like Hyperterminal. I find this easier than having to address the PIX, attach it to a switch and enable the switch port.

Yes, NOTEPAD is your friend... CTRL-A (select all), CTRL-C (copy), finally CTRL-V(past to terminal).
