I'm just curious as to what the general consensus is. I'm still using D6, as it does what I want/need. The latest versions appear to be either buggy or bloated.

There use to be a rule of thumb that said the best versions were the Odd numbered ones.
But I dont know if that was ever true?

I have used
3 (Stable)
4 (Not so stable)
7 I use this now, its more stable than 4, and there are some useful syntax enhancments and better librarys.

I have seen (but not used) 2007, The UI seems very bloated, and suffiently unlike D7 to create 'learning' problems.
But I expect you will learn and become used to it.

Playing the blues isn't about feeling better. It's about making other people feel worse.

I have used 1,2,4,6 and 2006. 6 has sufficed just fine. I went to 2006 because of an upgrade deal. All my new development is in 2006. I like the editor much more and I miss features when I drop back to do D6 projects. I have two programs that I still maintain in 4.

2007 is supposed to be much better and the help is greatly improve.

With DelphiSpeedUp installed I don't notice the bloat as much.

I think you have include whether personal/professional/enterprise in your comparison.
D1 (16bit) and D2(32bit) were huge improvements to TPW, yet left much to be desired.
D3 - skipped.
D4Pro - used and enjoyed for long time.
D5E - I once said I'd stick with until pried from my dead fingers.
D6Personal - did not like at all.
D7E - Enhancements (over D5E) made me switch to it and still my current IDE. I've had no reasons (yet) to look at the offering from Code Gear and don't use .NET
Some posts in this forum do make me curious, but not convinced. Looking forward to 2006 - 2007 user comments.

Delphi Rules!

I'm using 2007, my previous experience was with v3.

I never became what I would call good, but I could usually get by using help.
After a long break and therefore pretty much starting from scratch, I don't find the help on 2007 as useful to be honest.

I've used:
Delphi 1 which made Windows programming viable (TPW was horrendously difficult)
Delphi 2
Delphi 5 and like Roo found it first rate, until ...
Delphi 7 which I still use whenever I get a chance to work in Delphi - unfortunately not very often these days.

I've looked at the Turbo Edition of Delphi.Net, but prefer Visual Basic / C# for .Net work, so I don't foresee upgrading from Delphi 7.

I used them all except 2007:

liked most

D2, D5, D7 and D2006.

I still do dev of 1 project under D5E and all the rest under D2006P.

for the help function I still like D5 which has a speedy CTRL-F1 function.

for all the rest D2006 is a big improvement (more language features, refactoring, completer help, nice editor options like syncedit, ...).
I frequently use XML for my projects and that's not available in D5 (I backported the D2006(D7/D6) XML libs to D5, so now I can use it in D5).
only annoying thing is that D5 starts up under 10 seconds and D2006 under a minute...

Never underestimate tha powah of tha google!

I've only seriously used D3, D4 and D6. I got a free upgrade to D4 because I complained to Borland how buggy D3 was, and I haven't seen a reason to move from D6. I've trialled D2006 and D2007 and I hate the help system, all the .Net bloat that I don't want and the screen redesign. I'll look at D2007 again when I start using a widescreen monitor.
