Adobe, NAPP, Intel, and Athlon supports do not have a good answer for the following inquiry:
I want a new computer with speed in Photoshop the only consideration (processing digital images--and downloading at the same time).
Which is better, Pentium 4 with HYPERTHREADING OR Athlon 64 with HYPERTRANSPORT? Dual core Pentium D or Athlon 64x2? And which motherboard and which type of RAM? Finally, does the video card really matter for processing a digital image?

A real world configuration would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

RICK12,

Generally, the Intel chip is noted for faster image processing. While I am not sure you would notice the difference, barring large highly intense rendering.

A quick look at Adobe Photoshop CS2 indicates that it is a 32bit application and while it will run on a 64bit system it is not 64bit native, nor 2 processor enabled at this time.

If cost is not an object, then a dual-core will provide for future enhancements with out a rebuild.
Finally, does the video card really matter for processing a digital image?
This is definitely an area that you will benefit from both in processing and in being able to view your images. A high end video card will off load much of the tasks to the GPU from the main CPU. This will greatly enhance your image processing speed and is probably more important than the CPU for the ADOBE application.
