SQL 2005 running on Win2003 with 6 disks.

Anyone got ideas as to the best RAID setup? eg
2 disk Raid1 & 4 disk Raid5
Three 2 disk Raid1
Two 3 disk Raid5?

Thanks!

What is the intended servers function. Disk set up would depend on if it is to be an OLTP or an OLAP server.

OLTP has higher writes/updates than an OLAP that is predominetly setup for reads.

Though having just 6 discs does limit the possibilities either way.

Thanks

With 6 disks I would probably do something like:

RAID1 (2 discs) - OS, Logs & Binaries

RAID10 (4 discs) - Data

Remember with a Raid 10 you lose half your storage with a raid 5 you can figure you will lose about 1 disk worth. So depending on what your storage requirements are will help determine. It is hard to realy do anything with so few drives.

It's probably more reads than writes, maybe 2 to 1.
I realise there's not much you can do with 6 disks!
I'm OK with disk space, so RAID10 is no problem.

Then the RAID1 and RAID10 config should work for you.
