Hello all,

I recently installed backup Exec 9.0 (rev. 4454) onto 2 systems (both are Windows NT 4.0 SP6a). Both systems were previously using ArcServeIT to do backups.

I completely uninstalled ArcServe, rebooted, and then installed Backup Exec. On Server 1 (our ERP and database server with an external tape drive), there were no problems at all - it recognized the media right away, allowed me to schedule jobs, and the scheduled jobs have run without a hitch.

However, on Server 2 (our file and print server with an internal tape drive), the jobs that I schedule never seem to run properly. Twice in the past week I have come in in the morning to find a Dr. Watson error that bengine.exe failed on the screen, and the backup job failed. The logs from the jobs don't offer any clue about the problem - they often say a different thing each time, and the last job that failed didn't create a log. I can't find anything in the support docs on the Veritas website.

I also have Backup Exec running on our Windows 2000 domain controller (external tape drive), with no issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Shawn

Hi Winntshawn,
I'm having the same exact problem. I'm running nt 4.0 sp6, backup exec 7.3, with an internal tape drive. Have you made any progress solving this problem?

Thanks,
Mark

Try re-installing the tape deck drivers, and make sure you are NOT using drivers from MS. Get 'em from the manuf.

Steveot,
You said " 9.1 is a free upgrade"
Are you sure? I'm going to need that upgrade in a couple of months...

Lawnboy:
They did a free upgrade here (before i got here) from 7.6 to 8.0. Wow what a pain that was. I had to adjust something on it every nite for the thing to run right. I would get access errors, or i wasn't allowed to make changes, it was always something. They finally bought me 8.6. I threw everything out that even said 'veritas' and did a fresh install. It's been running for 6 months and i just do maintance on it occationally. Veritas's answer for every problem they ever got was 'upgrade' and all the problems they had just came with the newer version. So if it's running ok great but don't expect the new version to fix anything.

Oh, I expect nothing but headaches, but I've gotta do something. I'm upgrading Netware from 5.0 to 6.5 and BE 9.0 doesn't do NW 6.5.
