Benefits of moving from VARCHAR2 to NVARCHAR2

Good Day,

We are in the process of converting the DB from ASCII7 to UTF8. Some folks are suggesting to move from VARCHAR2 to NVARCHAR2 while we make this conversion. What are the benefits of making this data type change?

Only if you plan to report data in different languages and will be using the "TO_NCHAR, TO_NCLOB, NLSSORT..." and other NLS functions that will convert the datatype from the database character set to the national character set.
